DEAR DRAGON HELPS OUT is one of the books in Margaret Hillert's Dear Dragon series, and I thought I'd present some sample pages from these newer printings so you can see what they are like.

In this story the boy (who is never named) goes to his mother and asking what there is for him to do.

Mother answers by pointing out that his friend is outside and that she looks like she might need help walking her dog.  Boy and Dragon take the dog for a walk, have a little adventure with cats, and then they do other chores, like help dad rake and bag leaves.

When their friend shows up he joins them in finishing up the raking, and then boys and Dragon go off to shoot some hoops.  After which they return home, where mom lets them wash dishes.

There's a lot to like about this little practice reader. The artwork is bright and colorful, and the message that kids ought to be willing to help is just great.

One of the things I really love though is that there's no fuss about the friend who happens to be in a wheelchair. This child is shown not only helping out, but also playing. There's no differentiation made, as there shouldn't be.

Very, very simple books.  The DEAR DRAGON books would be good choices for a classroom, but since children soon move on to new reading levels, it doesn't usually make sense to purchase them for the home --unless you foresee new beginning readers in your future.
