I think that about the best way to describe this little book is “loveable,” a loveable Christmas story. Karma Wilson, with illustrations by Jane Chapman has given us another great addition to the Bear Series which includes the likes of Bear Likes More and Bear Snores On. This series is certainly a winner in every way.
All of Bear’s friends which include Mouse, Rabbit, Crow, Badger, Mole and Gopher, among a number of unnamed birds, decide that Bear Should not miss Christmas this year and sleep though the whole event. They gather at Bear’s winter sleeping cave, awaken him and then begin activities, all dealing with Christmas to make sure that Bear does not go to sleep again.
The well written text by Karma Wilson fits the illustrations perfectly, is easy on the ear and eye and makes for a great read-along book. The illustrations by Jane Chapman are of her usual high quality and are simply cute and adorable. I think this is one of the strong parts of this book; the animals are simply loveable. Their facial expressions and actions tell a story within themselves. Her mellow colors are comforting as well as the mellow, round and smooth lines.
Full of whimsy with a great message, it would be difficult to find a more appropriate Christmas Gift for the little ones. I do recommend this one highly.
Warning…Spoiler: Yes, Bear does stay awake through Christmas, but keep this to yourself from the little ones until you finish the book!

The Accelerated Reading designation for this book is 2.7 which means that the "average" 2nd Grader in the seventh month of the school year should be able to read this themselves without becoming too frustrated by the vocabulary.
