8 Great Father's Day Books to Share

With the new arrival at Shan's house, there's a lot more love for dad to share this year. And thinking about her household's celebration, our favorite librarian has picked out eight books that she recommends you check out.

My Father is Taller Than a Tree bookcover
The first book is My Father is Taller Than a Tree by Joseph Bruchac and Wendy Halperin. It's a poetic tribute to fathers, with each page giving a panoramic view of different fathers and their children. A beautiful gift for father’s day, though this may not be a book that appeals to the youngsters themselves as much as the adults. Ages 6 and up.

You Can Do Anything, Daddy bookcover
Shan's next recommendation is You Can Do Anything, Daddy. This is a perfectly delightful read by Michael Rex. It's about a father and son that’s a bit like the Runaway Bunny . . . only with robot gorilla pirates from Mars.

The boy in the story asks his father if he would rescue him if he were captured by pirates, and as the imaginings get more extreme, the father tells the son how he would come after the boy and rescue him no matter the challenge.

The pictures never get too scary, and they always include some funny or cute element. At the end of the story, the boy turns the tables and helps his father recover from the imagined adventure. (Shan's son loves this book!) Ages 2-8.

Just Me and My Dad bookcover
Just Me and My Dad by Mercer Mayer is going to appeal to fans of Mayer’s Little Critter series. These aren’t the most brilliant stories ever written, but they’re sweet paper backs with charming illustrations.

This one details a camping trip with father and son, which doesn’t go quite as planned, but manages to be a great outing for them all the same. Ages 2-6.

Daddy’s Girl bookcover
Garrison Keillor's Daddy’s Girl is next on the list. It's a book that celebrates the relationship of a father and daughter with softly drawn pics. There’s a version of this one available with an audio CD, so it can make a very nice gift for a father . . . or child. Ages 2-6.

Because Your Daddy Loves You bookcover
Because Your Daddy Loves You is about an idyllic father-daughter day at the beach. In this book by Andrew Clements, the father helps his daughter with various activities and each line has what the father could have done . . . and then what he chooses to do instead, out of love. Ages 2-6.

I Can’t Wait to Meet My Daddy bookcover
I Can’t Wait to Meet My Daddy is actually a book Shan hasn't shared yet with the family. By Kathleen Blease, the pics and description made Shan think this was just an irresistible gift for her husband this father’s day (shh! Don’t tell him!).

A baby not yet born dreams of all the things it will do with its father when its born. This looks like a great gift book for new dads. She promises to fill us in more on it when her husband gets his daddy-copy from his new daughter.

Little Boy bookcover
Little Boy is by Alison McGhee and Peter H. Reynolds. And in this story a father watches his little boy and reflects on boyhood pleasures. The illustrations are charming heartwarming. It's a great book for father and son to enjoy together. Ages 2-6.

I Already Know I Love You bookcover
Billy Crystal wrote I Already Know I Love You, and Elizabeth Sayles illustrated it. A 'celeb' book, this one is a sweetly sentimental tale that would be great for granddads.

With nice illustrations, a grandfather talks about how he already loves his grandchild-to-be-- even before they come into the world. Ages 2-6.

We hope this selection gives you some ideas for books to share with the great dads you know and love! If you have your own favorites we'd love to hear about them.

Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad
