The Apple Pie Tree is just a wonderful book to share with younger children. The large illustrations by Shari Halpern are cheerful and informative, and the story about the family Apple Tree is a great read-aloud that can easily be incorporated into a quick chat about the seasons and growth and development. (Good inspiration for an art project too.)
The story begins with a little girl telling us that every year her family watches their apple tree grow. This sets the stage for the changes of the seasons, and we get to watch not only the apple tree as it puts forth blossoms, gets pollinated and grows fruit; but also two nesting robins who raise their own little family.
The book ends with a recipe and pictures of the children making a pie. There is also one page dedicated to the roll bees play in pollinating the blossoms.
