Review: SCHOOL (Emily Arnold McCully)

bookcover of SCHOOL (Caldecott Winner) by Emily Arnold McCully

Emily Arnold McCully's SCHOOL is the winner of a CALDECOTT MEDAL.  Originally it was published without text but later on a few sentences of explanation were added. Whether you get a book with or without text you and yours should enjoy the cute story and adorable mice.

sample page #1 from SCHOOL (Caldecott Winner) by Emily Arnold McCully

The story is cute.  The first pages show a passel of young mice in the kitchen with mama. They are getting ready for school and if you have the text version you will see the text: "School Time!"

The following pages have all the little mice heading off to school with their books and backpacks... all but Bitty.  And Bitty mouse doesn't like this at all.  So she sneaks out to follow her siblings.  When she gets to school everyone is busy, but of course the teacher doesn't leave her outside.  She enters and watches all the classroom activities. And when the teacher finds her getting restless, she asks Bitty to be her helper.

And Bitty does help, but while occupied the teacher calls mom to let her know what is going on.  And by the time mom gets there, Bitty is tired and ready to go home.

USE:  Perfect for the first days of school or to read before school starts.  SCHOOL can be used to remind children of what school is like, or to show some of the activities that take place at school so little ones will know what to expect on their first days.

SCHOOL can be used as a Primer/practice reader (see level below).  Even by children too young to read. It's been shown that pretending to read is a beneficial activity for pre-readers.  Looking at the images and then constructing a story exercises children's imaginations and gets them ready to interact with the world of print.

WHAT I REALLY THINK:  Children will enjoy the cute artwork and the fact that this book has lots of mice!  The simple sentences are there for practicing, but the original text-less use is just as useful.  A good book for school book baskets/shelves.

Pam~

Review: ANNA'S BEST FRIENDS (A Disney Frozen book)

bookcover of ANNA'S BEST FRIENDS (Step into Reading - Disney's FROZEN) by Christy Webster
3.85 STARS from 123 GoodReaders

Anna's Best Friends is an adorable little practice reader with short sentences and the large text that is perfect for First Grade level readers.

The book recaptures moments of the movie and relates them back to friendship and how friends help each other.  It mentions, for example, that sometimes sisters disagree, while at other times they are nice.  And Olaf, Sven, and Kristoff are shown helping Anna.

Here are the first two pages so you can get an idea of what this book is like.

At under $4 dollars this book is very affordable and it would be a great addition to the classroom or home shelves if there are Anna and Elsa fans about.

Review: BABY PANDAS by Bethany Olson

bookcover of BABY PANDAS (Blastoff Readers) by Bethany Olson

The BABY PANDAS book is a part of the Super Cute! series which features baby animals.  My library carries three of the titles, and out of the three this one is my favorite.

Besides having super cute pictures of pandas! BABY PANDAS actually has some words many children won't visually recognize, like groom, bond, bleat, and nurse.  And each of these really good vocabulary words gives adults like us a chance to discuss what they mean.

The BABY CATS and BABY DOGS post has the reading levels for the entire series.  Find it here.

Review: BABY DOGS and BABY CATS by Kari Schuetz

THE SUPER CUTE! series features books at the First Grade Reading level.  There are 13 books in the series and each focuses on a baby animal -- Bears, Cats, Cows, Deer, Dogs, Goats, Horses, Monkeys, Pandas, Penguins, Rabbits, Sloths, and Wolves.

The books range from AR 1.0 to AR 1.7 , and have 99 to 121 words.  So not too much text.

One thing you should know is that this series is most likely meant for Libraries and Classrooms.  At least that's what the price and binding suggests.  But let me give you some information on the two books that my library has.

Review: BABY DOGS
bookcover of BABY DOGS (Scholastic) by Kari Schuetz

BABY DOGS is one of the easiest practice readers in this series.

WHAT I LIKED about BABY DOGS were the simple sentences and the large font. I also liked that the pages are color saturated with cheerful photographs of puppies, their moms and human friends.

Here's the text from the first page:
Young dogs are
called puppies.
Dogs can be
puppies until
age 2.

In the photo below you can see that color runs from page edge to page edge.  And that the text is presented in a happy and non-threatening format.

sample page from BABY DOGS (Scholastic) by Kari Schuetz

It would have been nice if more types of puppies were shown, but Labs are certainly beautiful dogs, and ones that children are likely to be familiar with.

This book introduces a few terms --like bond -- that children might not be familiar with. And the glossary at the end gives adults a chance to show children how definitions can be looked up.  Contents address topics like what the definition of a puppy is, litters, cleaning, drinking milk and playing.  Also when a puppy can be adopted, and the fact that puppies 'bond' and learn 'commands'.

BABY DOGS would make a nice practice reader for young children. The large font and simple sentences were well chosen.  And Puppies certainly have a broad appeal.

Review: BABY CATS

bookcover of BABY CATS (Scholastic) by Bethany Olson

BABY CATS is one of the books in this new BLASTOFF READERS series. It's at the mid-1st Grade level.

WHAT I LIKED about BABY CATS were the same things I liked about BABY DOGS.  The sentences were simple, the font was appropriately large, and photographs were large and cheerful.

sample page from BABY CATS (Scholastic) by Bethany Olson
Is this adorable or what?!?  So cute.
WHAT I DIDN'T particularly like was that some of the pictures were fuzzy. They might have done that for the cover, to give the beautiful little kitten a warm glow; but other pictures later in the book were also fuzzed.

In addition, I thought some of the content was 'a waste of time'. Whereas just about every text block in the BABY DOGS book provided information, this book pointed out that "kittens stretch out to relax. Big yawn!". And twice it talked about how cats/kittens snuggle for warmth, and twice it pointed out that kittens are cleaned with a tongue.

SO, BABY CATS is not quite as nice as the BABY DOGS book, but probably worth borrowing from the library, as the kitten photos --fuzzy or not-- are absolutely adorable. And this will certainly help motivate young readers.

Review: WE MARCH by Shane W. Evan

bookcover of WE MARCH by Shane W. Evans
Kirkus Reviews' Best Children's Books of 2012

WE MARCH is brilliant.  With 61 words and 32 pages of drawings, Shane Evans manages to capture the essence of the 1963 March on Washington.

sample page #1 from WE MARCH by Shane W. Evans

The morning is quiet.
The sun rises
and we prepare
to march.

We pray for strength.
We work together.
We come from all over...
to march.

We follow our leaders.
We walk together.
We sing.
We are hot and tired,
but we are filled with hope.

We lean on each other
as we march to justice,
to freedom,
to our dreams.
sample page #2 from WE MARCH by Shane W. Evans

What the images show are people walking in the dark.  A family rising early to meet at a church where they and others make signs to take with on the buses that will take them to Washington, DC.

sample page #3 from WE MARCH by Shane W. Evans

I love that all sorts of people are shown gathering for this purpose.  Black and white.  Male and female.  Old and young. In wheelchairs and of different religions. I like this because it allows adults to expand upon the message that this wasn't just the beginning of equal rights for people of different races, but for women and religious minorities, as well for those who are handicapped.

Excellent book that can be shared across a range of ages.

Review: FROM FLOWER TO HONEY by Robin Nelson

bookcover of FROM FLOWER TO HONEY by Robin Nelson

FROM FLOWER TO HONEY is a bright attractive book from Lerner Publishing and Robin Nelson.

My favorite pages were the ones that showed the beautiful close-up photographs of bees.

sample page #1 from FROM FLOWER TO HONEY by Robin Nelson

Although I also loved the bright orange text pages.  Very cheerful.

sample page #2 from FROM FLOWER TO HONEY by Robin Nelson

As you can see, the text is presented in a clear and uncluttered manner.  The table of contents pretty much exactly describes what's covered.
CONTENTS
Flowers open
Bees fly to the flowers
Bees drink nectar
Bees fly home
Bees store the nectar
A beekeeper takes the honeycomb
The beekeeper removes the honey
The beekeeper puts the honey in a jar
The hone is sent to stores
Time to eat!

Glossary
Index

The text accompanying the above photo is:
The beekeeper removes the honey.

The beekeeper puts the honeycomb into a
machine that spins.  The spinner squeezes
the honey out of the honeycomb.

FROM FLOWER TO HONEY is a book most of us would borrow, unless we had a classroom.  It does a nice job of giving children an idea of how honey gets to their grocery store.  (I don't know where they found that store, btw.  It's not somewhere I would frequent. A bit too rustic.)

MR. TIGER GOES WILD

bookcover of MR. TIGER GOES WILD by Peter Brown

What a fun book.  MR. TIGER GOES WILD is just really appealing, from Peter Brown's selection of bright orange for Mr. Tiger (versus the muted colors for other folk), right down to the cover, which you can see below.

sample page #1 from MR. TIGER GOES WILD by Peter Brown
You can't tell it from this image but the cover is ribbed, giving the stripes a cool texture.

The story is about Mr. Tiger's search for balance in his life.  As he appears in the first few pages he is very formal Edwardian-type creature.  And in fact his world is formal and prim. And not surprisingly, Mr. Tiger isn't exactly happy.

So he decides to make some changes: starting with walking on all fours.

sample page #2 from MR. TIGER GOES WILD by Peter Brown

Other changes follow and soon Mr. Tiger has dropped more of his inhibitions, and he's having so much fun that his friends can't help but join him.

Not that Mr. Tiger and his buddies stay in the wild.  No, eventually they return, but now they know they can be a little more happy with some balance.

sample page #3 from MR. TIGER GOES WILD by Peter Brown

I loved the artwork and really liked the story as my kids and I can certainly relate to the need to have down-time.  Like the time we set apart for running and laughing LOUDLY at the park. And also I like that the story gives the greenlight to experimentation and following the path that's right for us.

Great read.  Good Read-aloud.
