It's a Book is a ridiculously funny book that had my husband and I tee-hee'ing outloud. It's gotten rave reviews from Horn Book, Publishers Weekly, SLJ and even the Wall Street Journal, but honestly it isn't for younger children, as Amazon and even Permabound suggest. I say this because the reader is going to have to have a pretty sophisticated understanding of technology to "get" the humor. (Not to mention that the book uses the word 'jackass' in more than one way. My 4th grader read it and called out, 'Mommy, should I be reading this!")
I was going to write out a sample of the dialog to give you an idea of what the story is like, but fortunately I found this YouTube video which will give you the flavor of the experience. Enjoy!
THE SKINNY:::
Intellectual slapstick humor wherein a tech-savvy jackass tries to understand the noble low-tech book. I personally found myself cheering, if only inwardly, when he gets caught up in the adventure of Treasure Island.
I think children are going to have to be at least 10 or so before they are going to 'get it'. I'm going to buy copies from all my techie and reading friends for Christmas.
