My mother has a garden.
I'm her helper. I water. I weed.
And I chase away the rabbits
so that they don't eat all the lettuce.
It's hard work, and my mother's garden is very nice,
but if I had a garden...
And it would be full of imagination! If you planted seashells, you'd grow seashells. And tomatoes would be as big as beachballs!

Kevin Henkes delivers a lovely book in soft pastels. It's a nice read-aloud and I used it with my children to jump-start a session of drawing and goofy story telling about what our own special gardens would look like.

That night when Ed went to Mom and Dad's bedroom
the door was shut. He couldn't go in.
Poor Ed didn't know what to do.
Sniff.
Sniff.
Sniff.
Dad came out.
"Come on, Ed, back to bed!" he said.
"The night light is on,
you've got your friend.
There's no need to be scared.
You're a big mouse now."

Talking Points:::
The glossy pages of this book features the pleasant, cheerful drawings of Sebastian Braun.
The topic is one that many parents face: that child who won't stay in bed. Braun uses a mouse family to show children what the problem is. He shows the parents exhausted in the morning.
The solution is to leave the light on, and to use stuffed animal friends. It's an approach that will work if children are close to being able to make that 'big step' of staying put.
It's nice that the book is at the First Grade reading level, since that will allow many Kindergarteners and even younger children to read it themselves; reinforcing the message.
