Review: DIG, DOGS, DIG! by James Horvath

bookcover of DIG, DOGS, DIG! A Construction Tail by James Horvath
Dogs, Heavy Construction Equipment...
What More Can A Kid Want!

James Horvath has been amusing kids for over a decade, drawing Saturday Morning cartoons and Marvel Comics.

Now he's brought his finely honed skills to his new series that combines two kid-friendly topics: construction equipment and dogs!

Here's part of the crew. I wonder where Roxy is.

In DIG, DOGS, DIG, the crew is put to work building a park.  They wake up in the morning, have a good breakfast, and then it's a rush to work site, and a good time for all.

The dogs' cat is named Jinx.
Fans of front-loaders, excavators, and graders, etc., will enjoy seeing those pieces of heavy equipment hard at work.

This is a sample of an expansive 2-page spread.

I have to say that there are tons of things I liked about this book.  For one, I appreciated that it was a good Read-aloud. The rhymes worked and they weren't a challenge for me to get the rhythm right.
"There's trouble in the pit.
We've hit something big.
Get down in the hold and
dig, dogs, dig!"
I also liked that there were things to point out and discuss -- funny vignettes, as well as processes, like how concrete is laid out and fountains are installed.

The children, of course, were focused on the heavy equipment at work, and how much goofy-fun the dogs were having.

This mom appreciated the page that showed AND labelled that equipment.

DIG, DOGS, DIG was a fun book to share, and something you might consider if you have a child that loves things that go!

Review: DK Readers BUGS AND US by Patricia J. Murphy

bookcover of BUGS AND US (DK Readers) by Patricia J. Murphy

BUGS AND US is one of DK's (Dorling Kindersley) Beginning To Read books.

I like the approach that DK and Patricia Murphy takes with this material. The book begins by admitting that bugs do bug us.  It then goes on to show though that our lives are dependent upon bugs.  That they not only make honey and silk, but they pollinate our crops, and actually provide pest control by eating even peskier bugs.  Not to mention that they can be food for people.

Here's one more sample paragraph of text from another page:
Dragonflies eat 300 to 400 mosquitoes a day.
Praying mantises and green lacewings feast
on insects, large and small.  But, soon, other
animals will eat them!

3.61 avg rating — 36 ratings

In this book Dora tells us all about the things she is thankful for.  I love the format for this.  Dora asks a question, giving children clues like: "There is another person in my family who I am thankful for.  She is older and she tells me stories about my mami when she was a little girl".  Answer:  mi abuela.

3.89 avg rating — 377 ratings

Emily Elizabeth has gone to grandmothers, and in her absence Clifford gets lonely and decides to visit his mom in the city.

His adventures in getting there are pretty funny.  He gets snarled in traffic and is surprised by the Macy's Day parade (or something like it.)  The focus of the book though is his adventures and not on being thankful.

A cute entertaining book.

Here are two families that don't seem to have much in common. One has a Thanksgiving dinner that is coming out perfect. For the other family it's mostly smoke from things that are burning.

What do they have in common?
(They are thankful.)

Our turkey, burnt as toast.
Dad spills the gravy down his shirt-

excerpt #1 from RED KNIT CAP GIRL TO THE RESCUE (Red Knit Cap Girl #2) by Naoko Stoop (booksforkids-reviews.com exclusive)

RED KNIT CAP GIRL TO THE RESCUE begins with Girl and bunny playing with their friends.  They are making kites and boats and telescopes out of newspaper. When they see an SOS they head to sea to find out what's wrong.  Simple put they rescue an adorable bear cub and take him back to his mother.

excerpt #2 from RED KNIT CAP GIRL TO THE RESCUE (Red Knit Cap Girl #2) by Naoko Stoop (booksforkids-reviews.com exclusive)

I like this book.  It has the same charming artwork as the first book, but the story is a lot more appealing, especially when we get to see the delight of the cub and his/her mother when they are reunited.

And I thought it was absolutely charming to see all of the 'toy' items that were made out newspaper, used in the rescue. Does this mean that they made bigger boats and kites from newspaper?  Or are we just entering Red Knit Cap Girl's make believe world?

Very charming and very soothing.  RED KNIT CAP GIRL TO THE RESCUE could be read anytime of day; even at bedtime.

What child doesn't want to come to rescue.

Being a hero isn't as easy as it looks.  And Battling Boy finds this out when he is suddenly thrust from his cozy home onto a world where he's expected to be a hero who can deal with crafty politicians, and defeat monsters and bad-guys.

Battling Boy and dad
Paul Pope's story is slick, quite funny, and definitely guy-friendly. It's the story of a hero-to-be, a hero in training. The story begins with Battling Boy at home.  He's expecting to go outside and play with his buddies; but unbeknownst to him, it's The Day!  And he's sent off to a world where the old hero was just buried.

sample page #2 from BATTLING BOY (Battling Boy #1) by Paul Pope

I think a lot of readers are going to sympathize with Battling Boy's situation. The fact that he's growing up and struggling to find his unique identity.  I particularly liked the humor. There was one scene, for example, where Battling Boy calls his dad 'at the office'. He's facing his his first tough monster and  isn't doing well. The conversation between the two is choppy and curt because his dad is fighting his own monster. And without the images you'd think though that the two were talking about math homework, with the son frustrated, and dad a bit distracted at the office.

THE SNOWY DAY by Ezra Keats is the 1963 Caldecott Medal winner.  Keats tells the tale of a boy waking up to discover that snow has fallen during the night.  The book beautifully captures the childhood wonder of snow; and it was notable at the time because it presented the reading public with a child with dark skin in an urban setting.
