THE WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING (an Aesop fable)

I LOVE Aesop stories, and this one is done right. For one thing, Nancy Harrison's drawings are funny and very appealing.

Love the look on the lamb's face. 

For another, I love that the moral of story is given to children out front.  Mary Berendes tells them in HUGE font to "Beware of a wolf in sheep's clothing: things are not always what they appear to be."  And so that kids can think about what the story means as they are reading it -- or as they are listening to someone else read it.

The text in this book is at the 3rd grade reading level (see below), and the font is good sized. In fact, this might be a good selection for reluctant readers because there are only 354 words.

Here's a little silhouette.  Nothing particularly interesting
in this one though.  Others show the wolf sneaking around.

There aren't drawings on every page, but there are frequently little silhouettes under the text --with the drawings on the right hand page.

No overt violence. The wolf does carry off the sheep, and the shepherd at one point does carry off what he thinks is a sheep for dinner.  I recommend this book as a read-aloud, and as one teacher's might want to consider for their classrooms.
