Best Picture Books of 2010 - Shan's Picks

Children's Librarian and mother of 2 (okay 1's on the way), our Shan sees plenty of great books every year. Here are her favorite picture books for 2010.

Stormy Weather
by Deb Gliori

Love this rhyming bedtime book with it's rich illustrations and musical language. I've read it time and again to lull my son to sleep at night. (Ages 0-4)

  • Hardcover: 32 pages
  • Publisher: Walker Books for Young Readers
  • ISBN-10: 080279419X
  • amazon

How to Heal a Broken Wing
by Bob Graham

A sweet city-life picture book about a boy who finds a pigeon with a broken wing, who nurses it back to health. (It can make even the hard-hearted sort of like pigeons!) Simple text and line drawing pictures give this an almost graphic novel feel. (Ages 4-6)

**Starred Review** BookList

**Starred Review** School Library Journal
  • Hardcover: 40 pages
  • Publisher: Candlewick
  • ISBN-10: 0763639036

Waiting for Winter
by Sebastian Meschenmoser

A book of artistically drawn and irresistibly charming woodland creatures waiting for snow and theorizing about what snow is. Simple text combined with story-telling pictures. Older children actually appreciate this one more than the tots. (Ages 6-12)

  • Hardcover: 56 pages
  • Publisher: Kane/Miller Book Publishers
  • ISBN-10: 1935279041
  • amazon

Immi's Gift
by Karin Littlewood

This one just crossed my desk at the library. It's the beautifully illustrated story of an Inuit girl in the cold white world of snow who finds a brightly painted wooden bird one day while fishing. Warm-hearted and whimsical, this story is a lovely gift all on its own. (Ages 4-8)

  • Hardcover: 32 pages
  • Publisher: Peachtree Publishers (October 1, 2010)
  • ISBN-10: 1561455458
  • amazon

Grumpy Bird
by Jeremy Tankard

A fabulous preschool read-aloud that is a sure fire hit --even with the most skeptical of youngsters. Simple text and bright, black outlined illustrations make this book easy to see at a distance. Great to read to a group and worth some chuckles. (Ages 2-4)

Count
by Dwell Studio (boardbook)

I put this on my favorite's list because my son loves this little picture book of birds on a tree. The images are simple and are easy to point to and count--which is exactly what it's made for. My son's getting better and better at counting! (0-3)

Wow! The illustrations on all of these books look amazing! When I am looking at buying a kids book, I always look at illustrations first. The other day I purchased a really cute book titled, "The Thanksgiving Coat: Illustrated by Kailee" written by Elizabeth A. Hoadley that had the most beautiful illustrations. I was blown away to find out that the illustrator was the author's 5-year old daughter. Thank you again for the great list of books. They all look like very cute books.

Thanks, Shan, for your great list! One of my faves of 2010 was The Thanksgiving Coat by Elizabeth A. Hoadley. She had her 5-year old daughter illustrate the entire book and its a wonderful tale of helping others and giving back to the community. I highly recommend it!
