Nelson Mandela was born July 18, 1918, in Mvezo, South Africa. He was imprisoned as part of South Africa's apartheid policies. Remarkably, when he was released he did not let bitterness govern him, but set about trying to heal his nation. He eventually became President, serving South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
