6 Terrific Twisted Tales

What happens when a fairy tale is turned on its head? Here are some of my favorite picture book renditions of twisted tales that have a slightly different story to tell.

Picture of Rumpelstiltskin’s Daughter book
Rumpelstiltskin’s Daughter
by Diane Stanley

What if the poor girl who has to spin straw into gold was a bit smarter than the original tale and made some different decisions? The result is a heroine who manages to transform a king and a kingdom without resorting to any magic at all. Ages 9-12.

Falling For Rapunzel
by Leah Wilcox, illustrated by Lydia Monks

A hysterical retelling of Rapunzel where our lady in the tower is hard of hearing! When the prince calls to her to let down her hair . . . well that’s not what she hears. A delightfully silly story that should have listeners in giggles all the way to the end. Ages 6-9

Picture of Cinder Edna book
Cinder Edna
by Ellen Jackson illustrated by Kevin O’Malley

Cinder Edna is Cinderella’s next door neighbor, but she’s much more pragmatic about things than the over dramatic Cinderella. (For instance, Cinder Edna has a dress on layaway and takes the bus to the ball) A cute story, if a little redundant on it’s message at times. Ages 6-12.

The Frog Prince (Continued)
by John Scieszka, illustrated by Steve Johnson

All is not happily ever after with the frog prince. He’s not happy being a man, she’s not happy with the type of man he is. So, our prince sets out to try and become a frog again . . . and in the end finds a truly happy ending. Ages 6-12.

The Three Pigs
by David Wiesner

Wiesner’s works are always slightly surreal and completely magical to read. In this story, our three little pigs break out of the pages of their story and go for a romp through other stories. This has all of the artist/author’s clever illustrative power plus a cute story arc where all ends well for the pigs. Ages 6-12.

Picture of The Paper Bag Princess book
The Paper Bag Princess
by Robert Munsch

One of my favorite silly fairy tale twists. A princess in a paperbag has to go rescue her prince from a dragon. The plucky heroine finds a way to trick the dragon by playing on his vanity, but the triumphant ending may not be what anyone expects. Ages 6-9.

There’s plenty more where these came from! So check out your library or bookstore for more turned about fairy tales!

Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad
