Who Goes to School by Margaret Hillert

Yes, I am reviewing. I am reviewing many, many Margaret Hillert primers. I love her primers. Her primers are fun to read. They tell good stories. They motivate young readers. When they motivate young readers the mommies and daddies at Good Books for Kids are happy.

And in "Who Goes to School", Margaret Hillert also has fun playing with the notion of 'going to school'. At the beginning of the book, for example, there is a picture of a classic schoolhouse and the text says:

Who goes to school?
Can you guess?
No, no.
You can not guess,
but you will see.

And the reason you can't guess is because it isn't children going to school -- at least not until the end -- but dogs, lions, cats, and elephants. All a bit surprising and funny.

What is REALLY delightful about this primer is that Margaret doesn't talk down to her readers or stupefy the story. She shows the results of the animals' training. For example, she shows one dog working with a policeman, while another is involved in a snow rescue, while yet another is a seeing eye dog.

Little cats go to school, too.
Look at this cat.
What a pretty one.

Now look at the TV.
Here is the little cat. (Putting it's paw on a box of cat treats!)
See what work she can do.
She is on TV.

All-in-all, this is a great Back-to-School book, or practice reader for any occasion. The story is told with 65 unique words; 298 words all together.

THE TECHNICAL BITS:::
65 unique words; 298 words all together
The most challenging words is something. The rest mainly come from the standard Margaret Hillert list (hover here).
