Well, this was short book week. I think most of our books were going out except for these quick reads.
ON THE NIGHTSTAND:
![]() | The Apple Pie Tree is just a wonderful book for young children. The large scale illustrations by Shari Halpern are marvelously cheerful and attractive, and the story about the family Apple Tree, which harbors life like the bird family shown on the cover, as well as produces fruit, is educational as well as sweet.

Why We Have Thanksgiving. Using Dan Siculan's pictures, Margaret Hillert's sparse text for 1st Graders (AR 1.0) does the job of explaining Thanksgiving's origins better than many Middle School texts I've seen. I'll link to my review this week. There's just too much good stuff to say in a few words. | |
![]() | Ender's Game: Battle School I saw this book at the library and approached it with trepidation as I was afraid what they might have done to the story. But it's a smart retelling with artwork that drew me in and made me feel for the kids who manipulated so harshly. And the only shortcoming that I can imagine is that I'm not entirely convinced that someone who hadn't read the original book would be able to follow all of the intricate plot developments. |
Ook and Gluk. What can I say, Pilkey has the magic touch and he gives kids what they want. Dave, my 8 yo, must have read this book 20 times so far and he still laughs at the 'sign jokes', and how Ook and Gluk get one over on the boss. There's a real plot here and actually some more sophisticated concepts to think about. Got to give it 5-Stars based on it's ability to make kids want to read. See my review here. |
