Sunday Salon
I don't know about other people, but when I have a week where I get to read great books, I feel blessed. This was a GOOD week.
Finished:

Woods Runner by Gary Paulsen
(This was a good book. Set at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War, it contains not only a good adventure, but lots of intriguing information on weapons and what it was like to live at that time.
The story, in brief, is that a young teen's parents are taken captive by the Iroquois and British. When he heads out after them he finds out how tragic this war really is.) MG

Skinned by Robin Wasserman
(In this book, Wasserman does a stunning job of presenting the consequences that follow a young girl's near death when her parents decide to have her brain sliced-and-diced, scanned and downloaded into a mechanical body. Unfortunately for me, it was overwhelmingly character driven when I would have preferred more action. Still, anyone interested in the concept and ramifications of such a medical possibility should check out this book. ) YA
South by Patrick McDonnell
(I really liked this sweet, wordless book. The pages are filled with kid-friendly watercolors presented on soft brown pages. And the story of a cat helping a scared little bird to join up with his buddies in the south is adorable and exemplary of what we should all do for those in need.)
Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman
(Loved this fable by Mr. Gaiman. Odd, which means tip of a blade, helps Loki, Thor and Odin get back home after they have been tricked by a Frost Giant. )
Hatchet : 20th anniversary edition by Gary Paulsen
(This book was read by the entire 4th grade of my daughter's school. I was so intrigued by her comments that I wanted to read it for myself.
It's an excellent adventure story of a boy who survives for 54 days by himself in the wilderness of Canada after the plane he was in crashes. I recommend this hardback version because of the author's notes and cool artwork.)
(Lots of great pictures make this little book a great choice for those practicing reading at the 2nd Grade level.)
The Underneath by Kathi Appelt
(Alas, I'm one of the few people that didn't really enjoy this book. It's well written and, in fact, reminds me of some of Kate DiCamillo's dark toned works. However that tone just didn't suit me this week, and it wasn't a story I'd read to the children... ever.)
Currently Reading:
Raider's Ransom by Emily Diamand
(I am LOVING this post apocalypse tale of a fishing girl thrust into danger after Sea Raiders land at her village, setting off what looks to be a sea war between what's left of England-- the Last 10 Counties-- the Raiders, and Greater Scotland, the only place where technology isn't banned.) MG
The Rogues by Jane Yolen
(This one's a little slow so it got set aside for a few days. It deals with the turning out of the Scots from their subsistence level farms by their lairds.)
Incoming:
Pretties by Scott Westerfeld
(Yeah, time to read this follow up to The Uglies.)
The Sheriff of Yrnameer by Michael Rubens
(If you like the humor of Douglas Adams, you might want to take a peek at this book.
I haven't been able to read much because my husband snagged it and now I'm having to wait for him to finish.)
Pam
