This week I fell in love with a new author. And so I thank you, Megan Whalen Turner, for a most rewarding week of reading.
Finished:

The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
(I liked this follow up to the "The Thief" which I read last week. The tone is warmer and the characters are better fleshed out. I began to love and feel for them. {Lets face it, I was distraught over Gen's sufferings in prison.}
The series though is definitely not a light read in the sense that Miss Megan explains the politics that underlays the twists and changes in the lives of those in Eddis, Sounis and Attolia.) YA

The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
(Absolutely stellar work. In this book we are introduced to a new character, Costis, a simple soldier suddenly caught up in the workings of the powerful and dangerous. Miss Megan uses him to provide insight into Gen's struggles with the court of Attolia and his new role of king and husband.) YA

(Best for toddlers thru kindergartners. This book is cute, library-find material. I could totally see reading it to siblings to remind them that there is an upside to having a brother or sister.) KidLit
(Others most assuredly will like this book better than I. My principle objections were that it was too long and that the point of view changed too many times within the same chapter. See my review at LibraryThing.) YA
Doctor Maisy
(This is not my fave Maisy book. See my review at Amazon. {It didn't merit being included on this blog})

Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan
(I read this along with my 9 year old and have to say that it's so-so as far as the story and writing (despite being based on a true story). HOWEVER, I also can see why the 4th grade teachers assigned this book to all of their classes. Simply put, it encompasses a boatload of history and terminology. There is, for example, the fact of all the suppression of women in the 1800's, and also how 'orphanages' were run -- basically poor houses -- as well as the excitement of out countries move west to the rich lands of California and the lure of the gold fields. I found myself frequently explaining various old west terms like jehu and horse terminology --which is a good thing. Worth reading for a quick insight into this dynamic time.)
Currently Reading:
The Underneath by Kathi Appelt
(This book makes me think of Kate DiCamillo.)
Outgoing:

Corbenic by Catherine Fisher
(Read 50 pages and just wasn't into it. Maybe later.) YA
Wish Listed:
Pig Tale by Verlyn Flieger
Pam
Somewhere in the X-burbs
